August in Saratoga: The historic Saratoga Race Course

saratogaWhile we at Coalesce have made it a point to provide you with relevant industry news on a monthly basis, we would be amiss if we didn’t dedicate 1 month to update you on happenings in Saratoga Springs, New York, home of the historic Saratoga Race Course. Considering the Saratoga Race Course dominates the entire month of August, there is no better time than now.

Saratoga Race Course: Impact on Racing

Created in 1863 by John Hunter and William R. Travers, the Saratoga Race Course is not only the oldest racetrack in the United States, it’s also the oldest sporting venue of any kind in
the country.

Swelcome-to-saratogaaratoga is home to the Travers Stakes race, which is often called the “Mid-Summer Derby” to those in the racing industry. Travers Day, as locals call it, is the oldest major thoroughbred race in the United States and outdates the Kentucky Derby by 12 years. Also run at the Saratoga Race Course are the Alabama Stakes, the Hopeful Stakes, and the Whitney Handicap, a Breeders’ Cup qualifying race.

Over the years, many legendary horses have made appearances on the tracks at Saratoga. Of the 12 horses to successfully win the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont), 7 have made appearances in Saratoga, including Secretariat, Affirmed, and War Admiral. Locals hope to see American Pharaoh, the 2015 triple-crown winner, run in this year’s Travers Stakes on August 29. Attractions and Events at Saratoga Race Course

Fashion Saturdays and hat festivals provide entertainment throughout the summer and bring out the very best outfits from
racing fans.

Racing history buffs will also love a trip across Union Ave for a visit to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, where the sport’s best horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, and breeders are all celebrated and honored.

Other non-racing events and attractions in Saratoga include the Fasig-Tipton thoroughbred auctions, the Saratoga Casino and Raceway, and the famous Saratoga Polo Club with biweekly matches against the country’s best teams and open to spectators.
